Damn Vandals – Can’t Go Dancing When You’re Gone digital single (Sexy Beast)

Dear Damn Vandals: Thank you for finding a way to leave me – a renowned motor-mouth with a screw-you-if-you-don’t-agree-with-me opinion about everything – speechless with this release. This 2-song digital single features ‘Can’t Go Dancing When You’re Gone’, which seems to answer the obtuse ‘what-if?’ question ‘What might the mighty and infallible X sound like if John Doe were from England instead of Los Angeles?’. Is it really that good/great/amazing? Yes. Yes it is. It also features ‘Hey Little Bunny’, which needs to be looked at with two different trains of thought to be understood fully. First, the music. Swervedriver were the greatest of all the shoegaze bands, yeah? (OK, if you prefer My Bloody Valentine, let’s use them here. But you’re wrong. Ahem.) Musically, that’s what you get: shoegaze-style guitar swirls, a tight and steady drumbeat, little stabs of color that make your heart jump. Then the vocals. Lyrically, this is a fairly simple tune – a love song (OK, maybe it’s more of an ‘I want to do naughty things to you’ song, but let’s not split hairs here.) with a simple theme, lots of repetition, nicely delivered. It’s close to – but not quite raspy enough to be – in that Richard Butler (The Psychedelic Furs) realm, and everyone knows that the Furs are untouchable gods in the world of pop music so there’s that. It’s close to – but so much better than (my apologies to Rik from ‘The Young Ones’, who would smack me for saying this) Echo & The Bunnymen. But it’s close. And better. If this single were a virile young lady – and if I were the type of guy to believe in procreation in an overpopulated world, which I most certainly am not, FYI – I would ask it to sire some offspring with me, as twisted as that sounds.
